Extreme caution continues to be advised for any travel on the waterway between the Notigi Control Structure and the Thompson Seaplane Base including Wapisu, Threepoint, Footprint, Opegano and Birch Tree Lakes.
Slush has been reported on Threepoint and Footprint lakes and may be present on Birch Tree Lake.
Due to extremely dry conditions across the Churchill River basin in 2024, Manitoba Hydro waited until December to increase flows through the Notigi Control Structure from around 17,000 cfs to 25,000 cfs. These increased flows through frozen lakes and rivers may have contributed to reported slush conditions. Notigi discharges are expected to remain at 25,000 cfs into February.
A late freeze-up and periods of unseasonably warm temperatures (including a stretch in late-December where air temperatures rose above freezing) have also resulted in a thinner-than-normal river ice cover for this time of year along the Burntwood River.
Please obey all warning signs, stay away from any open water and keep to marked trails.
