Position Summary

The Summer Student Program is a community oriented work experience program for high school and Post-Secondary Students. Acting as a member of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Human Resource Development team, this position is responsible for working with both Employers and student employees. The Summer Student Coordinator will also be involved in all aspects of pre-employment orientations and programs as well. Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining various reports, file maintenance, correspondence and working with other Youth Programs in the Community.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Help organize and develop pre-employment programs for students;
  • Encourage a selection process for all applicants, which includes cover letters and resumes, reference checks, and interviews;
  • Plan and Coordinate orientation for both employers and student employees;
  • Ensure Employers have safe working environments and provide job descriptions;
  • Review of all applications and resumes;
  • Keep accurate records of all the students;
  • Assess and interview potential applicants and place them with employers based on qualifications and career goals; (Career Cruiser)
  • Intervene if there are any problems with either the student or employer and mediate if necessary;
  • Take steps to ensure that the students are paid the hours they work;
  • Encourage students to do evaluations of their job placements and employers to do evaluations of students;
  • Plan and coordinate an end of program event for all Summer Student Program participants;
  • Continuously review, provide suggestions for, and implement improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of the summer student program and policies;
  • Provide a written report and evaluation to help with planning for the next annual Summer Student Program;
  • Ensure all students complete required evaluations prior to end of program;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Attributes

  • Currently enrolled in a Post-Secondary Institution and returning to studies in the Fall;
  • NCN band member;
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as with minimum supervision;
  • Experience working with Youth in a Leadership capacity;
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written);
  • Proficient in office software products (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.);
  • Knowledge of Cree Language will be an asset;
  • Good problem solving skills;
  • Valid Drivers Licence and access to a vehicle recommended but not a requirement.
