State of Emergency – Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation
Date: Tuesday October 14th, 1:30 pm
For Immediate Release
The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Chief and Council have declared a State of Emergency due to severe winter weather conditions that brought approximately 30 centimetres of snow to the community. As a result of this storm, much of NCN has been without power since Saturday night, October 11, 2025, at approximately at 1:10 am.
The ongoing outage has left many homes without heat during extremely sudden and cold winter conditions, prompting the evacuation of NCN Elders and other vulnerable citizens to ensure their safety and well-being.
NCN Leadership is actively working with Manitoba Hydro to receive the latest updates and restore power as quickly as possible. The Nation has also reached out to Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) for emergency assistance and additional resources, and we are currently in the process of securing more generators to support community needs.
Our Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) team continues to coordinate response efforts, including the distribution of limited fuel supplies for generators. We ask all residents to conserve energy wherever possible while we manage these critical shortages.
We urge all residents to follow instructions from emergency officials and to stay informed through official NCN communication channels for updates on evacuation procedures, community supports, and return plans.
We thank everyone for their patience, cooperation, and strength as we work together to keep our community safe during this challenging time.
Kinanaskomitinawaw,
Chief and Council
