Joint Statement from NCN Chief and Council and the Emergency Measures Operations (EMO) Team

The safety and wellbeing of our citizens remain the highest priority of NCN Chief and Council and the Emergency Measures Operations (EMO) Team.

In recent weeks, our community has experienced several serious incidents, including two separate boat fires involving youth, escalating alcohol and drug-related violence, and a shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of June 26.

According to RCMP, a13-year-old youth sustained gunshot injuries and required emergency surgery. We are grateful the youth is reported to be in stable condition, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the family during this difficult time.

These incidents remind us that the safety of our children and youth must be our highest priority. We ask all parents, guardians, grandparents, and caregivers to closely supervise their children and ensure they observe community curfews:

 

  • Children 12 years of age and under: 9:00 p.m. curfew (as per the recent Order in Council update), unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Youth ages 13 to 17: 11:00 p.m. curfew.

 

Chief and Council, the EMO Team, Justice, First Nations Safety Officers, Health, Education, and the NCN Family and Community Wellness Centre will continue working together to strengthen community safety, support youth and families, and enhance curfew enforcement and community patrols.

Citizens are also reminded that the fire ban has been reactivated and fireworks are prohibited until further notice due to current wildfire conditions.

NCN is currently responding to multiple emergencies, including community violence, animal control concerns, the ongoing mental health and suicide crisis, and the risks associated with wildfire season. Gang activity, violence, intimidation, drug trafficking, and criminal activity will not be tolerated.

We encourage everyone to check on family members, support our youth, assist our Elders, and report dangerous activity to First Nations Safety Officers or RCMP. Community safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Together, we will continue to support one another and work to ensure that NCN remains a safe place for our children, Elders, and families.
