As our community prepares for the upcoming Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation 2026 Election, leadership opportunities are opening up for those ready to serve. If you are considering running for the position of Chief or Councillor, or if you want to support a candidate, it is crucial to understand the formal nomination process required by the Nisichawayasi Nehethowuk Election Law 1998, c. E-1.

To ensure a smooth, transparent, and fair election process, all candidate packages must be thoroughly completed and submitted with the required documentation.

The Nomination Form Requirements

Every candidate requires the backing of the community to run. Your nomination paper must include the printed names, addresses, Treaty numbers, and signatures of at least twenty-five (25) eligible Onuwosonekew (Voters) of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation. If you collect more than 25 signatures, you can attach additional sheets to your official paperwork.

When filling out the form, please ensure that names are clearly printed exactly how they should appear on the ballot—both in English standard text and in Cree Syllabics.

Mandatory Checklist for Nominees

In accordance with NCN Election Law, your nomination paper will only be accepted if it is accompanied by the following five items:

  • 1. Recent Criminal Record Check: A written check issued no more than three (3) months prior to the nomination meeting date. It must confirm that you have never been convicted of an indictable offense (or sentenced to a jail term for an indictable/hybrid offense), OR confirm that it has been at least eight (8) years since the conviction/sentence/appeal line has cleared, subject to specific restrictions regarding severe offenses.

  • 2. Clear Drug Test: Written confirmation of a negative illegal drug test from a reputable, qualified organization, administered within fourteen (14) days prior to the nomination meeting.

  • 3. Signed Testing Acknowledgement: A written agreement stating you agree to be subject to random testing for illegal drugs throughout the election period and during the four-year term of office, if elected.

  • 4. Nomination Fee: A $50.00 non-refundable processing fee.

  • 5. Official Photo: A 2”x2” black-and-white, head-and-shoulders photograph to be used directly on the election ballot.

Consent and the Nomination Meeting

Accepting a nomination is a commitment to the people. By signing the Consent of Nominee section, candidates officially agree to the nomination and commit to attending the formal nomination meeting. This meeting is a vital opportunity for candidates to stand before the community and explain their vision, values, and reasons for seeking office. All signatures must be properly witnessed, dated, and localized.
