POSITION SUMMARY:

The Nelson House Medicine Lodge Inc. is seeking applicants to fill four (4) board appointments, each running from three – five years.  This is a volunteer position that requires commitment to attend quarterly board meetings, and in monthly sub-committee meetings. The NHML Board of Directors is a policy driven entity which has two significant functions; the development and oversight of policies and procedures; and secondly, provides direction to the Executive Director.

The Nelson House Medicine Lodge Board of Directors requires the following positions:

  • Chair: The Chair provides leadership and guidance to the Board, presides over all board meetings, and acts as the NHML’s primary representative.
  • Co-Chair: The Co-Chair serves as the second-in-command to the Chair. They may assist the Chair in their duties, fill in while the Chair is absent, or take on specific responsibilities assigned by the Board.
  • Elder: The Elder will provide spiritual and cultural guidance, support decision-making, and help maintain the integrity of our healing approach during board meetings and organizational planning; Ensure that traditional protocols and teachings are respected in service delivery and governance; Support the integration of Indigenous healing practices, ceremonies, and language into the Medicine Lodge’s treatment programs; Act as a cultural advisor and mentor to staff, clients, and fellow board members; Help build relationships with local communities, knowledge keepers, and other Elders.
  • KTC/MKO Representative: This position ensures that the voices, values, and priorities of Northern and remote Indigenous communities within the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) and Keewatin Tribal Council (KTC) communities are reflected in the governance and strategic direction of our treatment centre.

  • Honesty (Tapwíwihk isi): Encourages transparency and accountability in all aspects of governance, fostering trust and safety for those in recovery and beyond.

Candidates for this position must be knowledgeable of the Treatment Centre’s processes, service delivery, confidentiality, conflict resolution, and funding advocacy. Must role model a healthy, clean and sober lifestyle, and be willing and able to share their knowledge, skills and expertise to benefit the organization. These positions come with modest honoraria and will entail occasional travel.
