Under the supervision of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief and Council, the NCN Electoral Officer will be responsible for managing and coordination elections and/or by-elections in the community for up to a 4-year term. This individual will be required ensure proper administration of the voting process at the voting station. The Electoral officer will be in charge of all matters at the voting station and is responsible for maintaining order in the voting place.


  • Must be familiar the NCN Election Law and NISICHAWAYASI NEHETHOWUK LAWS
  • Must be able to manage the voting station and election personnel
  • Is responsible for administering voting at an assigned voting station during advance voting or general voting
  • Must account for and secure all voting materials, and conduct initial count after election(s)
  • Report to and advise Chief and Council of recommendation and/or designate to voting procedures
  • Must be responsible for deputy electoral officers, other officers, and employees necessary to the voting process
  • Ensure the Election laws NISICHAWAYASI NEHETHOWUK LAWS are carried out
  • Promote fairness, impartiality, and compliance with the Election Laws
  • Deal with challenges that arise during the election process, including judicial reviews and investigations of alleged election offences
  • Explain/Communicate the voting procedure, ballots, and monitoring of the conduct of the election to voters/Citizens
  • Must develop a workplan, timeline and budget for each election.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Exercise general direction and supervision over the administrative conduct of council and board elections
  • Ensure the voters list is prepared and posted in public locations prior to the date of the council or board election
  • Enforce fairness, impartiality, and compliance with this Election Law on the part of all election officers
  • Delegate responsibility to any deputy electoral officers and other officers as may be necessary to ensure the duties in this Election Law are carried out
  • Use media, information meetings or other means, to provide NCN Citizens with information about the electoral process, including the provisions of this Election Law, nomination procedures, qualification of candidates, voting information and council or board election results
  • Determine the number and location of regular and travelling polling locations
  • Appoint scrutineers for each poll
  • Establish the procedures for the use of mail-in ballots if required
  • Report and compile results from elections and document election procedures to council and make recommendations
  • Prepare and amend voters’ lists
  • Administers required oaths
  • Close the voting station and conduct the ballot count
  • Appoint deputy electoral officers, returning officers and such other officers and employees as are necessary

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation without any criminal offences
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Willing to learn and take direction
  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers
  • Must be able to work under pressure in some situations
  • Work overtime as required
  • Must be willing to take inquiries from the candidates, public and electoral team at all times.


  • Is not allowed to engage in any partisan political activity from the time the oath of office is taken for the position (such activity will result in immediate cancellation of appointment)
  • Communicates no bias or opinions on the election while at the voting station(s)
  • Answers only those questions relating to the process of the election (e.g., voting hours)
  • Is responsible to take Oath of Confidentiality
