Under the supervision of the NCN Electoral Officer/Deputy Returning Officer the Security Officers will be responsible for ensuring a transparent and democratic election.  The Security Officers are required to provide a secure, safe environment for the voters and to assist the Election Officials in containing disturbances at the polling locations.  They are non-political and do not represent any candidate.

Job Summary:

A Security Officer is a professional who watches over surveillance cameras, guards the inside and outside of polling locations, and ensures people (voters, election officials) and valuables on the property are safe and out of harm’s way.

The goal is to help the company in maintaining excellent working conditions by keeping our facilities safe and problem-free.

Responsibilities of Security Officers:

  • Security Officers are responsible for the installation and maintenance of the security camera,
  • Security Officers are responsible for installing the 150 feet marker outside the polling station.
  • Ensure that voters & candidates do not wear campaign materials within the polling station or within one hundred and fifty feet of the polling station.
  • Ensure the candidates or members of their team who are driving voters to the polling station stay out of the 150-foot marking of the polling station.
  • Ensure that intoxicated voters do not enter the polling station.
  • Direct voters to the correct voting table and may be called upon to act as interpreters if need be.
  • Patrolling polling location regularly to maintain order and establish presence
  • Monitoring and authorizing entrance of vehicles or people within the 150 polling station markers
  • Removing wrongdoers or trespassers from the polling station
  • Will be responsible for detecting any suspicious behavior and preventing vandalism, thefts or other criminal behavior.
  • Secure all exits, doors and windows after end of operations
  • Check cameras periodically to ensure election process is recorded
  • Investigate people for suspicious activity or possessions
  • Respond to alarms by investigating and assessing the situation
  • Provide assistance to people that require assistance
  • Apprehend and detain wrongdoers according to legal protocol before arrival of RCMP
  • Submit reports of daily surveillance activity and important occurrences

Abilities Required:

  • The Security Officer must be well-trained dealing with wrongdoers. The ideal candidate will inspire respect and authority as well as possess a high level of observation.
  • Proven experience as security officer or guard
  • Knowledge of legal guidelines for area security and public safety
  • Familiarity with report writing
  • Excellent surveillance and observation skills
  • Tech-savvy with experience in camera systems
  • Trained in First Aid/CPR and self-defense
  • Ability to speak Cree is an asset but not necessary
  • Must have good communication, organizational and public relation skills
  • Able to be assertive
  • Competent and reliable
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be able to work under pressure in some situations
  • Must be willing to take inquiries from the general public at all times.


  • Is not allowed to engage in any partisan political activity from the time the oath of office is taken for the position (such activity will result in immediate cancellation of appointment)
  • Communicates no bias or opinions on the election while at the voting station(s)
  • Answers only those questions relating to the process of the election (e.g., voting hours)
  • Is responsible to take Oath of Confidentiality
