Under the supervision of the NCN Electoral Officer the Poll Clerk will be responsible for managing and securing voters list, poll book and all forms and  election materials for its designated poll.   This individual will work together with all the election personnel to ensure proper and efficient functioning of the polls throughout the two voting days.

Job Summary:

  • Must be familiar the NCN Election Law & Regulations and NISICHAWAYASI NEHETHOWUK LAWS
  • Must be able to manage the designated poll assigned
  • Is responsible for administering voting list of the designated poll assigned
  • Must account for voters list and poll book and secure all voting materials and close of poll
  • Promote fairness, impartiality, and compliance with the Election Laws
  • Explain/Communicate the voting procedure, ballots, and monitoring of the conduct of the election to voters/Citizens

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all recording at the designated poll (voters list, pollbook, forms, envelops, etc.)
  • Tallies the results of the votes for each candidate
  • Provides information to inside scrutineers regarding which electors have voted
  • Assists the Returning Officer in fulling in forms and envelopes for the close of poll
  • May provide assistance to the voter upon EO request
  • Balances voters list at close of poll
  • Directs any voters who have questions on the procedures to the EO/DEO
  • Assists Returning Officer with the close the voting station and conduct the ballot count

Abilities Required:

  • Poll Clerks are expected to abstain from the use of alcohol and non-prescription drugs when carrying out their duties on the two election days.
  • Poll Clerk appointed shall not engage in or participate in any political activities in favour of or against, any person running for council, but they may vote in any election held under this Election Law.
  • Ability to speak Cree is an asset but not necessary
  • Must have good communication, organizational and public relation skills
  • Able to be assertive
  • Competent and reliable
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation without any criminal offences (Criminal Records Check)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers and community citizens.
  • Must be able to work under pressure in some situations
  • Must be willing to take inquiries from the general public at all times.


  • Is not allowed to engage in any partisan political activity from the time the oath of office is taken for the position (such activity will result in immediate cancellation of appointment)
  • Communicates no bias or opinions on the election while at the voting station(s)
  • Answers only those questions relating to the process of the election (e.g., voting hours)
  • Is responsible to take Oath of Confidentiality
