Every Wednesday, the Elders of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation open their doors and their hearts to anyone wanting to learn the Cree language and the stories that come with it. These weekly Cree classes have become more than just lessons; they are gatherings of laughter, learning, and love for our Cree culture.
On November 5, 2025, the Elders shared stories about the past Chiefs and Councils of NCN, bringing to life memories that reached back through decades of leadership. They spoke with pride about the positive changes each Chief brought to the community and reflected on the challenges they overcame together. Hearing the Elders share personal experiences about our past and current Chief and Councils who helped shape our Nation was truly like listening to living history.
Alongside the stories came the teachings of language, proper pronunciation, traditional words, and the meaning behind them. Each lesson is a reminder that our Cree language is not just something we speak; it’s something we live.
And of course, no NCN gathering is complete without a good meal. The Elders served up warm bowls of homemade chilli and fresh bannock, welcoming everyone to share in food and fellowship. It’s a place where no one leaves hungry, not in spirit or in stomach.
Whether you’re just learning Cree or you want to practice and strengthen your language skills, this class is open to all, young and old alike. The Elders’ faces light up when new learners walk in because it means another person is helping carry forward the gift of the Cree language.
We encourage everyone to come out, listen, learn, and be part of keeping our culture strong. After a few visits, you might find yourself speaking Cree and understanding more than words, you’ll understand the heart of who we are as NCN people.
