WHEREAS:
From 1908 to 1996, Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation conducted elections for Chief and Council pursuant to an order issued under Section 74 of the Indian Act and any relevant regulations pursuant to the Indian Act;
WHEREAS:
In July 1998, Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation members adopted the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Election Law 1998, c.E-1 and on May 10, 2018 the Election Law E1 1998 was amended to be referred to as the Nisichawayasi Nehethowuk Laws, Election Law 1998, c. E-1,
WHEREAS:
By ministerial order in July 1998, it was declared that the Chief and Council of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation in the Province of Manitoba shall be selected by elections to be held in accordance with the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Law 1998, c.E-1 as amended from time to time;
WHEREAS:
The last election for Chief and Council was conducted on August 24 and 25, 2022 with the term of office for current Chief and Council expiring September 6, 2026 as per Oath of Office signed on September 6, 2022;
WHEREAS:
In accordance with subsection 11 (2) of the Election Law 1998, c.E-1 Chief and Council is to commence every election by a Council Resolution and to provide such Council resolution to the Election Officer;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
- Chief and Council call the election for the 2026 -2030 term of office based on the following:
a. Nomination papers shall be available on June 30, 2026 and the submission deadline to file nomination papers with the Electoral Officer by 1 :00 pm on July 15, 2026.
b. A nomination meeting shall be held on July 20, 2026, commencing at 1 :00 pm at the Norman Linklater Memorial Complex,
c. Mail-In-Ballots will be sent out as soon as reasonably practicable after the nomination meeting on July 20, 2026 and must be received by the Electoral Officer no later than August 25, 2026.
DO HEREBY RESOLVE:
d. Election days shall be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 from 9:00 am -8:00 pm and Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 9:00 am -8:00 pm in the following locations
i. Nelson House -Norman Linklater Memorial Multi-Plex
ii. Thompson -St. Joseph Hall
iii. Winnipeg -Holiday Inn (1740 Ellice Avenue)
iv. Leaf Rapids -Town Center
v. Travelling Poll -Nelson House on August 26, 2026 and Thompson on August 27, 2026 - Chief and Council direct the NCN Chief Executive Officer to immediately provide a copy of this Council Resolution to Annette Swanson, NCN Electoral Officer as required by Section 11 (2) of the Election Law 1998, c. E-1; and
- The Electoral Officer is to immediately issue an Election Order and post the order in at least five (5) conspicuous places on NCN Lands, in at least one location in Thompson, Winnipeg and other locations in Manitoba where significant numbers of voters reside, as well as on NCN’s Website and NCN Achimowin Radio Station.
