Are you a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in keeping facilities clean, safe, and running smoothly? We’re hiring a Maintenance Worker to support the day-to-day upkeep and safety of our shelter’s buildings and grounds.
About the Role
The Maintenance Worker ensures that the shelter’s facilities and grounds are well-maintained, clean, and in good working order. You’ll perform a variety of janitorial, landscaping, repair, and maintenance tasks—ranging from routine upkeep to special projects that contribute to the comfort and safety of staff, residents, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform minor building repairs (e.g., patching walls, fixing locks, adjusting doors)
- Clean and sanitize shelter facilities and maintain grounds
- Complete basic plumbing and electrical tasks such as replacing lightbulbs or unclogging drains
- Paint interior and exterior surfaces as needed
- Maintain and report on inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment
- Assemble/move furniture and help with shelter setup (tables, bulletin boards, etc.)
- Transport food, supplies, and materials to/from the shelter as required
- Identify and report repair or safety concerns to the Executive Director
- Support special projects or seasonal tasks (e.g., snow shoveling, landscaping)
- Perform other duties as assigned
What You Bring
- High school diploma or GED, with at least 1 year of maintenance or custodial experience
- Working knowledge of basic tools, equipment, and maintenance practices
- Understanding of safe cleaning, sanitation, and landscaping methods
- Ability to identify and report potential hazards
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive work ethic
- Valid driver’s license
- Able to perform physical tasks (lifting, bending, standing, etc.)
- Current satisfactory criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact Check (or willingness to obtain)
Assets
- Familiarity with repair of public or residential buildings
- Knowledge of shelter or community-based facilities
- Experience with basic inventory tracking and equipment upkeep
