Are you a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in keeping facilities clean, safe, and running smoothly? We’re hiring a Maintenance Worker to support the day-to-day upkeep and safety of our shelter’s buildings and grounds.

 

About the Role

The Maintenance Worker ensures that the shelter’s facilities and grounds are well-maintained, clean, and in good working order. You’ll perform a variety of janitorial, landscaping, repair, and maintenance tasks—ranging from routine upkeep to special projects that contribute to the comfort and safety of staff, residents, and visitors.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform minor building repairs (e.g., patching walls, fixing locks, adjusting doors)
  • Clean and sanitize shelter facilities and maintain grounds
  • Complete basic plumbing and electrical tasks such as replacing lightbulbs or unclogging drains
  • Paint interior and exterior surfaces as needed
  • Maintain and report on inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment
  • Assemble/move furniture and help with shelter setup (tables, bulletin boards, etc.)
  • Transport food, supplies, and materials to/from the shelter as required
  • Identify and report repair or safety concerns to the Executive Director
  • Support special projects or seasonal tasks (e.g., snow shoveling, landscaping)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or GED, with at least 1 year of maintenance or custodial experience
  • Working knowledge of basic tools, equipment, and maintenance practices
  • Understanding of safe cleaning, sanitation, and landscaping methods
  • Ability to identify and report potential hazards
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive work ethic
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to perform physical tasks (lifting, bending, standing, etc.)
  • Current satisfactory criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector), Child Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact Check (or willingness to obtain)

 

Assets

  • Familiarity with repair of public or residential buildings
  • Knowledge of shelter or community-based facilities
  • Experience with basic inventory tracking and equipment upkeep
