SEPTEMBER 22, 1937 – JULY 24, 2024
It is with deep heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Elder Sam Dysart, a cherished member of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation. Sam was born on September 2, 1937, in South Indian Lake and was raised traditionally to live off the land. On July 24, 2024, Sam peacefully journeyed to the spirit world, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, kindness, and profound dedication to our community.
Sam was an entrepreneur and one of the best commercial fishermen that NCN has ever known, he was also an avid ice fisherman and hunter. Sam was a devoted educator who ardently preserved our traditional culture, values, beliefs, and teachings. His intimate knowledge of the land, waters, wildlife and nature was matched only by his reverence for the gifts bestowed upon us by the Creator. Sam’s humility, heart of gold, and infectious sense of humor endeared him to all generations, forging countless meaningful relationships within our community.
As a respected Elder, Sam contributed immensely to our Nation. In addition to being involved in countless community events, he played a pivotal role in the Ethinesewin Monitoring for the Wuskwatim Generating Station project, sharing his traditional knowledge and wisdom. His advocacy extended to wildlife conservation through his longstanding service on the Woodland Caribou Committee, where he guided efforts to protect and sustainably harvest our herds.
Sam’s passion for passing on traditions was evident in his involvement with youth wilderness training and trapping programs, ensuring our cultural practices endure. His dedication was recognized in 2018 when he received the esteemed title of Elder of the Year from the Medicine Lodge. Sam’s commitment to education continued through his participation in the Otetiskiwin Kiskinwamahtowekamik (OK) School Elders Program, where he imparted the richness of our traditional way of life to students.
Throughout his life, Sam served as a key translator, facilitating communication and preserving the Nehetho Cree language for future generations. His contributions to our Nation’s cultural heritage are immeasurable and everlasting.
Details regarding the viewing, procession, wake, and funeral arrangements will be shared on the NCN website and Facebook.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam’s family and friends during this difficult time. The communities of both NCN and OPCN mourn the loss of Elder Sam Dysart but we are comforted knowing that his spirit will continue to guide us from Michimahch’ohci (time immemorial), under the protection of Kiche-Manitou.
Rest in Peace, Elder Sam Dysart. Your legacy will forever live on in our hearts and in the traditions you cherished and nurtured.
