March 1, 1947 – December 29, 2024
It is with profound sadness and immense respect that we announce the peaceful passing of Elder Myrtle “Vicky” Young, surrounded by her loving family, on the evening of Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 10:20 p.m. at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB.
Elder Vicky Young was a truly extraordinary individual whose life was a testament to dedication, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to her people and her culture.
A proud Nihitho Iskew, she embodied grace, strength, and humility, serving as a beloved Matriarch, mother, grandmother, Chapan, teacher, and mentor to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her radiant presence and daily wearing of her stunning ribbon skirts honoured our Nihitho heritage and the sacred role she held as an Elder and Matriarch of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.
Her life’s passion was the preservation and revitalization of the Cree language, a mission she pursued with remarkable dedication as an educator. Even at the age of 77, she continued to inspire and nurture the youngest generations, teaching Nihitho language immersion to kindergarten students at Otetiskiwin Kiskinwamahtowekamik Elementary School. A valued and cherished member of the Nisichawayasi Nehetho Culture and Education Authority, her work touched the hearts of students, parents, and grandparents, leaving a lasting legacy on countless lives.
After retiring from teaching in NCN, she continued her work by teaching in Thompson for a couple of years, before returning to her beloved community to continue sharing her knowledge and passion for the language and culture.
Elder Vicky’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. She selflessly raised many children—both biological and non-biological—earning her the affectionate title of “Mom” from so many in NCN. Her wisdom, encouragement, and kindness uplifted all who had the privilege of knowing her, and her friendly chats, joyful laughter, and heartfelt stories will be deeply missed.
Elder Vicky Young’s tireless contributions to NCN were profound, shaping the community’s cultural and educational landscape for generations. Two of our current NCN Councillors, Cheryl Moore and Shirley Linklater, were among the countless students blessed to have her as their teacher, a testament to her influence and dedication.
Elder Vicky was deeply loved and respected by her colleagues—teachers, educational assistants, custodians, administrators—and especially by the children whose lives she enriched every day. Her beautiful spirit, immeasurable love, and selflessness earned her the highest honor and praise from all who knew her.
On behalf of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Elder Vicky’s family in NCN and Opaskwayak Cree Nation. May they find comfort in the profound legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of love, knowledge, and cultural pride that will continue to guide future generations.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate her life and the incredible legacy she leaves behind. Fly high, Elder Vicky, and rest in eternal peace. You will forever remain in our hearts, and your teachings will live on through the generations you inspired. Kisahkitin!
