Heidi Spence

On behalf of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief and Council and all of our citizens, we wish to recognize, honour, and thank Heidi Spence for the tireless, compassionate work she has done in her role as MKO’s MMIWG2S+ Liaison Unit Director.

Her leadership, presence, and commitment to supporting families and survivors has been undeniable and deeply meaningful.

Heidi’s voice, strength, and presence- whether at community events, support circles, or at the justice tables- reflect what our people often need most: someone who listens, who holds space for mourning and healing, and who insists that families and survivors be heard. From awareness walks and memorial gatherings to advancing the 231 Calls for Justice, her efforts have helped families find strength, hope, and a path forward. Thank you for your service, Heidi!

To Grand Chief Garrison Settee and the entire Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) family- thank you deeply for honouring our relative, Heidi Spence.

We honour you for recognizing Heidi’s contributions to MMIWG2S+ family members and survivors and for standing in solidarity with our Nations, families, and loved ones.

And finally, to Heidi Spence:

Kinanaskomitin- thank you for your heart, your leadership, and your commitment to honouring lives and justice. Your work inspires and uplifts us all!

Ashley Desrosiers (nee Moore)

On behalf of the Chief & Council and all citizens of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, we extend our deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks to our relative, Ashley Desrosiers, (nee Moore), Program Manager of Emergency Management for Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO).

We recognize and honour Ashley’s extraordinary leadership during the 2025 wildfire evacuations, where her tireless efforts helped unite federal, provincial and First Nations governments to ensure the safety and care of our citizens.

Ashley’s work to coordinate partnerships, support the evacuation logistics, and ensure our people were supported in a time of crisis stands as a powerful example of service, courage and solidarity. Because of her advocacy and hard work with the MKO Emergency Management team, our communities felt seen, heard and protected when it mattered most.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Garrison Settee, Grand Chief of MKO, and all MKO staff for honouring our NCN citizen at the MKO AGA on November 4th.

Kinanaskomitin Ashley! Your hard work and dedication touches many lives, uplifts our communities, and strengthens our collective resilience. Thank you MKO, for recognizing excellence, and for standing alongside all northern First Nations when crises arise.

With respect and gratitude,

Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Chief & Council and Citizens
