A Remembrance Day Tribute to Our Veterans
Born in Nelson House, Manitoba, in 1921, John Charles Spence devoted his life to service, country and community. Like many young men of his generation, John answered the call of duty during the Second World War. He was sent to Brandon Residential School for many years and later enlisted in the Canadian Army in Brandon.
As a gunner in WWII, John served courageously in Canada, Britain, and Northwest Europe from 1941 until his honourable discharge on November 17, 1945. For his dedication and bravery, he received several medals and decorations, including the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp as well as a War Medal 1939-45.
John’s commitment to his country and his Nation was a lifelong source of pride.
Though he seldom spoke of the war, his service reflected a deep sense of responsibility and courage. In later years, he was honoured to take part in Aboriginal Veterans Day and Remembrance Day services in Nelson House, where his quiet strength and humble presence inspired many.
John Charles Spence embodied the spirit of perseverance and community that defines the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.
His story reminds us that the freedoms we enjoy today were built upon the sacrifices of those who served, often far from home, yet always with love for their people and land.

We Also Remember
We honour NCN and other northern Manitoban soldiers who served during the Great Wars. Their courage and resilience continue to guide our Nation and future generations.
“It is important to reflect and honour our passed loved ones who fought for our freedom and those who gave their service or their lives.”
We remember all soldiers and Indigenous individuals that serve from the North and around the world, who stood in defense of peace and freedom. Their legacy lives on in our stories, our ceremonies, and our hearts.
