On February 14, 2025, Chief Angela Levasseur and AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson attended an event hosted by the University of Manitoba Northern Social Work Program to raise awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+). This event, led by NCN’s Bailey Tays and Ariel Simpson-Linklater, focused on the injustices Indigenous women continue to face and the lack of justice for many families.
During the event, attendees reflected on the many cases that remain unsolved, with families still searching for answers. A table displayed pictures of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Northern Manitoba, a heartbreaking reminder of the ongoing crisis. Some cases have been unsolved for decades, leaving loved ones in pain and uncertainty.
To show solidarity, attendees participated in a walk through Thompson, enduring -37°C cold temperatures to honor those lost and demand change. With a police escort ensuring safety, community members, NNOC students, RCMP officers, MP Niki Ashton, U of M students, and other supporters walked together, calling for action to address systemic issues such as racism, inadequate police investigations, and lack of resources for Indigenous communities.
The event served as a powerful reminder that the fight for justice continues. Thank you to the Northern Social Work Program for hosting this important gathering and bringing communities together in support of MMIWG2S+.
