Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Public Works Director, the Water Treatment Plant Operator shall maintain and operate the Water/Wastewater Treatment facilities at the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation. They must provide safe potable water to the community economically and to ensure the wastewater facilities are operated in such a manner that they do not damage the environment.

Job Duties: Key functions

  • Monitors influent and effluent water parameters and adjusts plants treatments to maintain compliance with water quality standards;
  • Monitors the operation of water distribution systems including, pumps, motors, and other equipment associated to the treatment plant; read gauges, and other instruments; maintain and update reports;
  • Inspect deep-well pumps at intake and lift-stations, stand-by engines, chorine pumps, and related pump station facilities for proper operation; perform general maintenance and routine repairs as needed;
  • Report to Chief and Council, Community Health Representative and Environmental Health Officer on problems that occur at the facility;
  • Collect water and sewage samples; conduct routine laboratory tests; record results and place on file;
  • Always maintains an adequate supply of chemicals for the facility;
  • Utilize all safety precautions related to all work performed;
  • Perform work in emergency situation or on weekends as required;
  • Respond to citizens complaints of poor water quality; investigates and determines cause for complainant; resolve complaint in accordance with appropriate procedures;
  • Develop a maintenance program for all equipment associated with the Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant;
  • Diagnose operating problems and take effective courses of action;
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.


  • Three to five years of experience as a level ll Water Treatment Plant Operator and completion of Grade 12 with supplemental course work in biology, chemistry and math. A combination of education and experience will be considered;
  • Knowledgeable of modern water and wastewater treatment principles, practices, methods and procedures;
  • Knowledge of methods and precautions in storing and handling a variety of chemicals;
  • Knowledge of functions and purposes of water/wastewater treatment systems;
  • Possess good analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Strong academic ability and relevant technical knowledge;
  • Will have good communication both verbal and written, organizational and computer skills;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license preferred.
