The Northern Authority plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of First Nations children, families, and communities across Northern Manitoba. As the governing body overseeing child and family services through seven First Nations CFS Agencies, including the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Family and Community Wellness Centre, the Northern Authority’s mission is to safeguard and strengthen our communities for future generations.

Below are the details for this important role:

 

Call for Nominations: Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation Family and Community Wellness Centre Representative to be on the Board of Directors of the First Nations of Northern Manitoba Child and Family Services Authority

Summary:

Under The Child and Family Services Authorities Act, the First Nations of Northern Manitoba Child and Family Services Authority (Northern Authority) is responsible for managing the provision of child and family services (CFS) through seven First Nations CFS Agencies in Manitoba, including the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) Family and Community Wellness Centre. The Northern Authority is governed by a board of directors.

This is a call for nominations for a representative of the NCN Family and Community Wellness Centre to sit on the board of directors of the Northern Authority for a three-year term.

 

Board Member Qualifications:

Board members will be individuals who are residents of Manitoba who are members at large of one of the communities served by the First Nations child and family services agencies mandated by the Northern Authority and who:

  • are committed to the objectives of the Northern Authority to oversee the delivery of child and family services by mandated agencies for the best interests of children, families and communities;
  • can actively participate in board deliberations;
  • are willing to respect other directors and to share power in the group process;
  • hold a professional designation in a field that is relevant to the powers, duties and responsibilities of the Northern Authority;
  • or possess extensive experience in child and family services, finance, human resources, or administration; and
  • are familiar with First Nations language and culture.

 

As well, board members will have knowledge of relevant child welfare legislation, including The Child and Family Services Act, The Child and Family Services Authorities Act, and An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families.

 

The following persons are not eligible to be a director:

  1. A member of the Legislative Assembly
  2. A director of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc.
  3. A director of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs
  4. A director of the Manitoba Metis Federation Inc.
  5. A director of Child and Family Services
  6. A director, officer or employee of an agency
  7. A spouse or common law partner of (a) to (f)

 

 

Term of Office of Board:

  • Members of the board of the Northern Authority shall serve three (3) year terms. There shall be no limitation on the number of terms that may be served by a Director.

 

Appointment of Directors:

  • In accordance with the Authorities Act, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, Inc. (MKO)

is responsible for appointing the board of directors of the Northern Authority. MKO shall appoint a board member based on the recommendation of a Nation.

 

Board Member Expectations:

  • Required to provide the Northern Authority with a personal resume at the commencement of his/her term of office
  • Attend all meetings required by the board of the Northern Authority
  • Attend both the Northern Authority’s Annual General Meeting and MKO’s Annual General Assembly
