Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Economic Development Officer (EDO) plays a critical role in advancing the economic growth strategies outlined in the NHDC Strategic Plan. The EDO leads and supports initiatives related to business development, special projects, funding applications, and entrepreneurial support for NCN members. This includes identifying market opportunities, coordinating economic development activities, and maintaining positive relationships with governments, community members, funders, and business partners.
The EDO will also assist with business planning training, support new business ventures, coordinate special projects, and contribute to NHDC’s communications and outreach strategies. A strong knowledge of First Nation governance, funding mechanisms, and economic development practices is essential for this role.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement growth strategies to achieve employment and revenue targets for NHDC and NCN.
- Identify and apply for funding to support objectives in the Strategic Plan.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to NCN entrepreneurs, including business planning and training opportunities.
- Identify and research markets and business opportunities.
- Coordinate special projects and support new business ventures.
- Develop and maintain the business directory and ‘preferred supplier list’ in accordance with Procurement policies.
- Promote NCN business profiles in line with the Communications Strategy.
- Lead and participate in strategic business planning and corporate studies.
- Foster positive relationships with the business community, industry, government, and NCN members.
- Create business resource articles for the Achimowina newsletter and social media channels.
- Develop and coordinate a Home Ownership Fund and Youth Mentorship Program.
- Organize and deliver information sessions for NCN members on business plans, funding applications, and resources.
- Identify and secure funding for training and development programs for special projects.
- Stay current with industry best practices, legislative updates, and procurement policies (e.g., Merx).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the needs of the Corporation or the CEO.
Education and Experience:
- Degree/Certificate in business, community, economic development or related discipline. Post-secondary education MBA, Business Administration or Project Management – will consider combination of education & work experience
- Economic Development Officer or Land Management Certificate.
- Proficient with all Microsoft Office Programs, email & electronic communication tools, information management and other computer-based programs.
- Exceptional written and office administrative experience.
- Accessing loans, grants and funds available to First Nations – loan/grant proposal writing and reporting.
- Knowledge of First Nation Land Governance and Development.
- Willingness to obtain training in business certification.
Skills and Abilities Required:
- Experience in developing, implementing and managing economic development growth strategies and projects.
- Possess exceptional written, administrative and organizational skills for deliverable based results.
- Identify and analyze business opportunities and industry trends.
- Proven computer skills and applications.
- Class 5 Drivers license
- Ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically and professionally always
- Ability to compile, organize, analyze, and communicate data and results concisely
- Ability to prioritize tasks, projects & meet deadlines
- Ability to think proactively, critically & independently to make strong & informed business decisions.
