Nelson House Trappers Association
The Nelson House Trappers Association oversees the operation of the Trapping Program, comprised of a resource and land use coordinator, manager and Local Fur Council. The Program runs throughout the year, with the active trapping season open from early October until late May of each year. There are approximately 250 trappers who use the NCN Resource Management Area.
- Fur subsidy – The trappers receive 80% subsidy for the catch production they made that season. i.e. If the trapper sells his fur to Bruno for a $1,000.00, the trapper brings his receipt to the trapper’s manager and receives $800.00 for his income. If the trapper owes money to the Trapper’s Program, he is deducted for whatever he owes. The trapper doesn’t receive all or any, if he owes money to the Trapper’s Program until the bill is totally cleared. The trappers can receive up to $1,000.00 a year after he pays all his expenses.
- The Snowmobile program – The snowmobile program is a loans program to help the trapper on a purchase of a snowmobile. The trapper can receive 50% of the cost of a snowmobile from the program provided he is able to cover the other 50% down payment with his own money. The trapper pays off his loan with the subsidy he receives from fur receipts. He can also pay his loan with other income if he chooses.
- Cabin Repairs – The program provides material for cabin or cabin repairs for the trap line lineage holder upon approval from the local fur council.
- Start-up Program – A start-up program is provided to the trapper to help with cost of groceries, equipment, and gas. A $300.00 purchase order is issued to the trapper for gas, groceries and equipment for a total of $900.00.
- Trap line Trail Cutting Program – The fur council approves a certain amount of money each year to trail cutting, for income support to the trappers, using the trap line. This is also for safety reasons for all travellers on our resource area. Bush trails are cut and ice trails are marked.
