Position Summary:

The Community Engagement Manager will provide communications, networking and collaboration support to the Southern Chiefs’ Organization in the community of Long Plain First Nation. The Community Engagement Manager will serve as an important bridge in the gathering of traditional knowledge for the development of a First Nation family law, principles and practices. The Community Engagement Manager will support the relationship between the SCO and the community of Long Plain First Nation, with a specific focus on engaging the community and capacity development in the area of child welfare. The Community Engagement Manager will ensure that engagement functions and resources are effectively integrated, organized and leveraged to meet strategic and operational needs.



  • A University or College degree with specialization in Child Welfare, Social Service, Community Development or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education, training and professional experience.


  • Relevant, recent and significant experience in the provision of coordination support to First Nation communities or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • Experience working with Elders in First Nation communities;
  • Experience working with First Nations/Aboriginal people at a community and/or political level including in the area of community engagement and community/organizational development;
  • Awareness of community values.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of community engagement and development, provincial child welfare system, and Aboriginal/First Nations child welfare system needs;
  • Knowledge of child welfare related issues in general and those affecting First Nation communities in particular;


  • Ability to develop and document work plans, including ongoing adaptation and reporting;
  • Ability to build and maintain respectful and effective relationships with diverse groups, organizations, and individuals to work collaboratively and cooperatively, including good conflict management skills and abilities;
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities effectively, time manage and problem solve, including early identification of issues/problems that may arise, with an awareness of when to elevate issues as appropriate;
  • Ability to coordinate, design and facilitate meetings and other gatherings on a wide variety of topics and with diverse groups and/or individuals, including the development of prereading and meeting documentation;
  • Ability to communicative effectively both orally and in writing, including making presentations to a variety of audiences, ensuring material is adapted as required for the audience;
  • Knowledge of Ojibway languages is an asset;
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively utilize Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Must Possess

  • A valid Class 5 MB Driver’s License;
  • Must Provide Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check;
  • Flexibility in Work Schedules;
  • Travel may be required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and support a First Nation community engagement strategy;
  • Assist the community in identifying and prioritizing current and emerging child welfare needs to inform SCO planning activities;
  • Report to SCO on progress and performance objectives and to resolve problems as they arise;
  • Organize local community engagement activities that are integrated with identified priorities and align with the SCO engagement strategy;
  • Facilitate the exchange of information and ideas between all communities engaged and the SCO;
  • Assist in the rollout of communications materials to the community working in collaboration with the SCO Child and Family team;
  • Support SCO Child and Family department leads in workshops, community gatherings and other events where information about child and family knowledge can be shared with community members;
  • The work of the Community Engagement Worker is collaborative and requires team work in both daily work and on project/initiative-based efforts, with the intent to maximize support to the SCO and access to wisdom and experience as well as the efficient use of resources and knowledge and information exchange.
