SUMMARY:
The Health Care Aide is a member of the health care-team reporting to the Nisichawayasihk Personal Care Home Chief Executive Officer/Director of Nursing and in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team the Health Care Aid (HCA) is responsible for providing services within an established framework using standard techniques and procedures as determined through the Resident Care Plan. These functions will include all aspects of daily living such as homemaking services, some meal preparation, personal care, rehabilitation activities, social interactions, recreational and leisure activities and spiritual expression with varying degrees of complexity. Additional areas of support include access to the greater community, awareness and orientation, and assistance in ambulation. Health Care Aid will perform their role in accordance with the Nisichawayasihk Personal Care Home Vision, Mission, and Values, Policies and Procedures, and adherence to the Codes of Ethics of the respective disciplines.
DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Personal Care Home, the Health Care Aide is responsible for:
- Performing and assisting with duties related to meeting client/patient/resident personal needs in accordance with the established policies and procedures.
- Function effectively in a dynamic and demanding environment utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
- In Long Term Care setting, must be able to work in an environment that is favorable to medicinal smudging.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrates understanding of the role of the Health Care Aide within a health care setting.
- Knowledge of the techniques and procedures of patient/resident care related to activities of daily living.
- Proficient in Windows programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet).
- Satisfactory employment Adult Abuse Registry Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Records Check.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Grade 12 or GED completion, Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized Educational Institute, background in health sciences such as: HCA, Rehab/Recreation degree or diploma, (related training and work experience will be considered).
- Knowledge of NCN Nihitho (Cree) language and culture would be an asset.
- CPR, 1st Responder
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training
- Good physical and mental health to meet the demands of the position.
- Clear, articulate verbal skills, positive body language and the ability to document concise, accurate information.
- Caring & non-judgmental attitude.
- Understanding of client empowerment and issues faced by individuals experiencing physical and mental health issues.
- Knowledge and use of computers an asset.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively with clients, family and co-workers
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Knowledge of fire and emergency procedures.
- Knowledge of person and facility security.
