DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS (DOO)
Job Summary
The Director of Operations is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the organization’s operational activities and effective delivery of the organization’s operational performance. Their primary purpose is to make the organization profitable. They will collaborate with stakeholders to develop strategies, enhance processes and address complex organizational challenges.
In the areas of specie projects, business development, property management, major land developments and capital projects the Director of Operations will implement successful systems and planning in alignment with the organization’s goals and vision.
The candidate must have exceptional organizational skills, a strategic mindset, and the ability to maintain order in a fast-paced environment. We are looking for someone who is dynamic, highly efficient and a natural leader capable of providing direction, mentorship and guidance to the operations team and championing their departmental vision, strategy and goals.
Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Manage department work plans, budgets, proposals and reporting requirements.
- Develop priorities, policies, procedures, protocols, regular reporting. Monitor and track project activities and financial accountability.
- Review financial information with other senior managers and adjust operational budgets to promote profitability.
- Conduct regular reviews to assess operational performance and develop action plans for improvement.
Organizational Management:
- Set goals for departments and individual managers in accordance to the company strategic & operational plan.
- Provide leadership to ensure that all operations are compliant with industry standards, regulations, and certifications.
- Provide guidance to staff and evaluate performance, develop and implement the corporate HR system and workforce planning.
- Assume responsibility for timely reporting to executive management, funders or regulatory agencies as required.
- Responsible for adherence to all company policies, procedures and government regulations. Conduct periodic review and recommend necessary changes.
- Foster strong cross-functional relationships within the organization to drive synergy and collaboration.
- Act as the main point of communication between operations and senior leadership.
- Monitor productivity of departmental areas and create cross-functional action plans.
- Participate in long-term business planning at the managerial and executive level.
- Work with project and business managers to develop and administer budgets and planning for business finances, special projects and programs.
Property, Project & Program Management:
- Oversee, lead and guide all major projects.
- Develop operational plans that promote long-term success and growth
- Work with the finance department and both business & project managers to develop financial and budgetary plans.
- Evaluate regularly the efficiency of business procedures according to organizational objectives and apply improvements.
- Monitor day-to-day operational systems and recommend solutions for improvement if necessary.
- Work cooperatively with NCN Lands to ensure adherence to NCN Land Code & Laws including
- granting land interests, registry and fee structures.
- Oversee property management including the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments.
- Plan and monitor the day-to-day running of NHDC and work directly with the business
- managers to ensure smooth progress and maximize growth and profitability.
- Implement regular feedback mechanisms and facilitate dialogue with employees to enhance
- development opportunities. Evaluate team performance identifying gaps and implement
- training or performance management as required.
- Develop and execute staffing plans to meet operational demands.
- Manage procurement processes and coordinate material and resources allocation.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field, (MBA preferred)
- Strong knowledge for First Nations Land Governance and leading land development projects,
- Familiarity with National First Nation land and fiscal institutions, (FNTC, FMB, FNFA, FNII and LABRC)
- Will consider years of experience with education including senior level project management and will support ongoing training,
- Project Manager, Planner designation, experienced Land manager certificate will be
Skills and Experience
- 10+ years’ experience in a leadership role.
- 5+ years’ experience in First Nation Economic Development.
- Proven experience as a senior manager/officer.
- Excellent organizational and leaderships skills.
- Experience in high level project management and management systems
- Solid understanding of business and land development.
- Knowledge of fiscal planning, budgeting, proposal writing and reporting.
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
- Proficient in MS Office, business technologies and info/records databases.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills including verbal and written abilities.
- Experience in working collaboratively with company executives and managers including strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of Project Management and Planning. (PMP)
- Experience with developing work plans and budgets for major projects, accessing loan facilities, grants, and writing business plans
