On a recent visit to Nelson House, Terri Chevrefils and Bella Willman from the E.A.G.L.E. Urban Transition Centre, the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ Support Program, gathered with the NCN 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ Committee at the Alice Moore Education Centre to explore ideas for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community in Nelson House.
The meeting, full of positive energy and thought-provoking ideas, was a turning point in building solidarity for the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ individuals in NCN. Aalayna Primrose, Tony Spence, and Ellie Spence spoke passionately about the support they’ve received from OK School, noting that while the school has been a great ally, there’s a need for greater awareness and participation from the broader NCN community. Bella emphasized the importance of not only supporting the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ group but also inviting allies to join in.
Terri and Bella shared their personal experiences and encouraged the group to use inclusive language, ensuring that everyone in the community feels welcome, whether they are part of the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community or an ally. They explained that, when they were younger, there was a misconception that only those in the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community could attend such meetings, which limited participation. Today, they urge the NCN 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community to welcome everyone who wants to show their support, including advocates and allies.
One idea that resonated with everyone was the proposal to create a NCN 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ Logo, designed by the youth of NCN. This logo contest would not only engage the younger generation but also foster a sense of ownership and pride in the NCN community. The new logo could serve as a symbol of unity and inclusiveness for the entire NCN 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ movement.
Terri and Bella also praised the efforts of the Pride Club at OK School and suggested adding wording on their posters to specifically invite allies and advocates to attend and show their support. They commended the NCN Chief and Council for their unwavering support and advocacy, including their call for NCN to host its own Pride Day. They also recommended increasing the availability of promotional items, like stickers and magnets, for the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community and the Pride Club, ensuring that support is visible and accessible year-round.
It was particularly moving for Terri and Bella to reflect on the legacy of Late AMC Chief Kathy, whose voice in support of the Indigenous 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community has left a lasting impact.
This meeting marked a significant moment in the ongoing effort to make NCN a more inclusive place for all its members, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. As we continue to work together, we can ensure that the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community in NCN feels supported, seen, and valued, alongside their allies and advocates.
Through collaboration, open dialogue, and community involvement, we can create an environment where everyone belongs. It’s time to show up, speak up, and make a difference in NCN.
Together, we stand united in support of the 2Spirit-LGBTQQIA+ community.
