The NCN Public Health Department is informing the community that head lice is a growing concern, particularly in schools. We kindly encourage everyone to take proactive steps at home to address this situation. It is crucial that we respond quickly and effectively.
While head lice are not considered a major health concern when treated promptly, an untreated infestation can lead to complications such as:
- Mental health challenges and decreased self-esteem
- Skin infections
- Anemia (low iron levels)
Free Head Lice Shampoo Available: The following locations provide head lice shampoo at no cost:
- Public Health Department
- Nursing Station
- School Nurse
Additionally, head lice shampoo can be purchased over the counter at local pharmacies without a prescription. Pharmacists are available to assist with any questions.
Important Treatment Guidelines:
- Use the shampoo as directed and apply a second treatment 7 days after the initial application to ensure effectiveness.
- Conduct a thorough cleaning of your home. This includes vacuuming furniture and beds and washing clothing, bedding, coats, and hats.
- Regular head checks for children, especially during the school year are essential to monitor and prevent further infestations.
Home Remedies to Consider:
- Olive Oil or Coconut Oil: Apply to the scalp and hair, cover with a shower cap, and leave overnight. Comb out lice and nits in the morning.
- Tee Tree Oil: Mix a few drops with shampoo or apply directly to the scalp. Leave for 30 minutes before combing out lice and nits.
- Vinegar: Rinse hair with vinegar before combing to help loosen nits.
Contact the NCN Public Health Department for free lice shampoo or further assistance, please contact the Public Health Department at 204-484-2314. If transportation is a barrier, arrangements can be made for delivery. The school nurse is also available to provide shampoo and guidance.
