On March 2, 2025, the NCN community gathered for a memorable kids fishing derby led by the NCN RCMP. While many were excited about the prizes, which included gaming consoles and electronics, the true highlight of the event was the sense of community and togetherness that filled the air. Families came out in full force, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere as parents passed down wisdom to the younger generation. Parents were coming in pulling their kids on sleds, filled with coolers and fishing rods.
Throughout the day, you could hear fathers and mothers teaching their children how to properly tie fishing hooks, demonstrating how to use an auger to drill holes, and fishing techniques. The event wasn’t just about fishing! It was about sharing our Cree traditional knowledge, supporting one another, and fostering connections across generations. Families helped each other set up, showing the true spirit of cooperation and tradition within our NCN community. It felt less like a competition and more like a celebration of togetherness.
Watching the children laugh, play, and learn while practicing traditional skills was a heartwarming sight, one that we hope to see more often. The RCMP, in partnership with Jordan’s Principal, also made the day extra special by gifting each child who participated a sled, sparking joy as they raced to find hills to slide down with huge smiles on their faces. On top of that Hot dogs and Bannock were handed out.
For those who didn’t have fishing rods or gear, community members stepped in to teach the youth creative ways to fish, such as using water bottles. One lucky child who used the water bottle method even won a prize! Thanks to the support of the NCN RCMP and Jordan’s Principal, who supplied hooks, line, and minnows, everyone had the opportunity to take part in the fun.
The fishing derby was a wonderful success, and we want to extend our gratitude to the NCN RCMP for hosting such a memorable event. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and community spirit, one that will be remembered by all who attended. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event so special!
