On Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2024, Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Kyra Wilson visited Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN). Our Chief, Angela Levasseur, along with various educators and elders, proudly showcased the vibrant spirit of our community. During her visit to Nisichawayasi Nehetho Othithowin (NNOC) school, students, staff, and elders greeted her with a warm welcome, reflecting our friendly and hospitable NCN culture.
Grand Chief Wilson was deeply moved by the reception, embracing attendees and expressing her gratitude. She acknowledges how the heartfelt welcome from everyone was rare, and she was touched to see the excitement and enthusiasm of our community members who came to NNOC to meet her.
Junior Chief and Council made a special presentation, offering her flowers while dressed in their traditional attire, boys in ribbon shirts and girls in ribbon skirts. The energy in the school was filled with excitement as Kyra entered, her smile radiating joy and appreciation.
Chief Angela Levasseur, Director of Education Nic Campbell, NNOC Principal Valerie MacIntyre, and NNOC Vice Principal Natalie Tays led Grand Chief Wilson on a tour of the new high school, highlighting student achievements. These included stunning skateboard artwork, innovative 3D-printed designs, and the thriving Traditional and Cultural Program, where teachers Clinton Moore, Edward Moose, and Pipon Moose educate youth about Cree traditions, espeically hunting and gathering. The tour also showcased the Culinary Arts Program, led by Shane Scaife, who introduces students to unique ways of preparing traditional foods with modern influences, such as moose meat steam buns.
The visit concluded with an assembly where Grand Chief Wilson introduced herself to NNOC staff and students. Chief Levasseur and the Junior Chief and Council expressed their appreciation for her visit and the opportunity to share NCN’s culture and accomplishments.
During the assembly, students were asked, “What would you do if you were in the position of Chief and Council?” One memorable response came from a student who said, “If I were Chief, I would provide my mom with a new house because of all she does for him.”
The Junior Chief and Council demonstrated outstanding leadership as they spoke to their peers about their roles and excitement over hosting the AMC Grand Chief. As a special gesture, they also presented Chief Levasseur with a Valentine’s Day card signed by students.
A heartfelt thank you to AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson for visiting NCN and to all the community members who came out to showcase the strength and unity of our nation!
