Checkstop Keeps Weapons and Drugs Out of NCN
On January 6, NCN First Nation Safety Officers (FNSOs) stopped an SUV at the Highway 620 checkstop.
The vehicle’s occupants were two women from Thompson, two male youth from Nelson House, and the driver, a 16-year-old boy from Winnipeg.
The FNSOs seized open liquor from the vehicle and then realized they needed assistance from the Nelson House RCMP.
The driver was searched outside the vehicle and had illegal drugs, cash and cell phones on his person, and admitted to having a loaded handgun. In the vehicle, officers found cocaine, power tools, and a large amount of cash.
He was charged with offences including
Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.
The four passengers were arrested at the scene, but later released without charge.
Chief and Council would like to thank Chief of Law Enforcement Carol Kobliski, the FNSO staff, and the RCMP officers who are working diligently to keep our community safe!
