Celebrating NCN Land and Water Sovereignty
On June 17, the Land Use Plan (LUP) celebration began with ceremony. NCN Elders and pipe carriers gathered at the Medicine Lodge for traditional drumming, sacred pipe and prayers to bless the new Plan.
They reminded everyone that the Land Use Plan is here to give voice to the plants, the earth and the animals and to preserve our pristine lakes and land.
Later, the community gathered at the multiplex to celebrate. Gord Dumas, Lands, Environment and Resources executive director, provided information about the LUP. Everyone enjoyed storytelling, entertainment, dinner and door prizes.
It was a chance to celebrate the progress made so far and to acknowledge the important work to come in our Askiwi Apacihikowi Othaschikewin (Land Use Plan to benefit the future).
The Land Use Plan is a powerful assertion of the 1996 Northern Flood Implementation Agreement, also known as the Red Book. It is a document that helps Nisichawayasihk Creen Nation set rules and policies for acceptable and unacceptable activities on our land and waterways.
