Honoring NCN’s Strength, Unity, and Compassion During the Wildfires 2025

As the days grow shorter and the cold of winter settles in, many of us reflect on the incredible challenges our Nation faced not long ago. The summer of 2025 will forever be remembered as a time when wildfires swept across Northern Manitoba, forcing families and whole communities from their homes and testing the strength of entire communities. For Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, it was a season that revealed not just our resilience, but the deep love and unity that define who we are.

Our Nation extended that same kindness outward. While we were managing our own community and the possible evacuation, NCN welcomed evacuees from neighbouring communities like Split Lake and Cross Lake, offering them shelter, food, and care through our programs and departments. The community came alive with generosity; our nation’s cooks, drivers, coordinators, and helpers worked side by side to ensure our guests were treated with the same warmth and respect we give our own families. It was a powerful display of what it means to live by our Cree values of sharing, love, and unity.

When the fires drew close and evacuation became necessary, NCN rose as one. Leadership acted swiftly and decisively, ensuring every citizen was accounted for and cared for. Buses and vehicles moved day and night, transporting families to Winnipeg and surrounding areas, while the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) Team worked around the clock to coordinate housing, meals, supplies, and support for everyone affected. It was not an easy time, emotions were high, and uncertainty was plaguing our band members. But through it all, our people stood together as a nation.

Behind the scenes, countless workers and volunteers put in endless hours, often with little rest. They booked hotel rooms, arranged transportation, distributed essentials, and checked in on elders and families. They listened with patience, offered comfort, and made sure that no one was left behind. Their dedication reminded us that even in the most challenging moments, the spirit of NCN compassion never fades.

In recognition of these remarkable efforts, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) honoured both our community and leadership for their exceptional response and compassion during the wildfire crisis, when evacuating and being a safe haven for neighbouring communities.  The award celebrates the bravery, teamwork, and selflessness that NCN demonstrated in a time of uncertainty. MKO’s acknowledgement reminds us that the strength NCN is not measured only by its resources, but by the heart of its community.

As we look back, we are reminded that while the wildfires tested us, they did not weaken us, the wildfires brought out the very best of who we are. We saw departments work hand in hand, families care for one another, and leaders stand shoulder to shoulder with their Nation. Through smoke and displacement, we stayed united. Our environment may have changed, but our resolve as a Nation never wavered.

To everyone who worked tirelessly, the EMO team, program staff, volunteers, drivers, cooks, and leaders, thank you. Your strength, patience, and compassion carried our Nation through one of its most challenging times. You reminded us all what it means to be part of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, a community that stands together no matter the storm.

We are NCN. We are 313. We are strong, united, and proud.
