Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation holds several trusts, the two largest being the Nisichawayasihk Trust and the Taskinigahp Trust. Investment income from the trusts is used annually to support community projects and programs.
Nisichawayasihk Trust
Created in 1996 as part of Northern Flood Implementation Agreement
The Nisichawayasihk Trust was created in March 1996 as part of the Nelson House First Nation Northern Flood Implementation Agreement between Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Hydro. It mainly contains compensation funds NCN received for adverse effects of the Churchill River Diversion.
Taskinigahp Trust Created in 2006 as Part of Wuskwatim PDA
The Taskinigahp Trust was created in June 2006 as part of the Wuskwatim Project Development Agreement. Compensation funding NCN received on signing the PDA was deposited into the Trust. In future, assuming NCN remains a partner in the project, NCN's share of revenues generated from the sale of Wuskwatim electricity will be deposited
to the trust.
Anticipating that the Taskinigahp Trust may eventually receive significant revenue each year from the sale of Wuskwatim power, the trust indenture specifies a five-year community plan (that will be reviewed every three years and updated as necessary) needs to be developed to allocate those revenues. Development of that plan is underway, led by a steering committee comprised of NCN organizational managers.
NCN Trust Office Administers Trusts
The NCN Trust Office administers both trusts, which generate investment revenue each year that is available to support community projects and programs. Click to link to the NCN Trust Office website.
The Trust Indentures for both trusts specify that a comprehensive community consultation process be undertaken to allocate funds for distribution. A joint community consultation process for the two trusts known as CAP/CIP (Community Approval Process/Community Involvement Process) has been created to administer community allocation and approval of trust revenues.
NCN organizations and individual seeking funding support must submit applications annually describing their funding needs. Applicants present their projects at a series of public meetings where they are reviewed and discussed to determine their merit and compliance
with trust criteria.
Consideration is given to projects that create, sustain and improve community infrastructure and or address the community’s social, economic and physical needs. Projects must have an impact on job creation within the community.
Nisichawayasihk Trust and Taskinigahp Trust revenues fund resource programs such as Claims, Country Foods, Fisheries, Trappers, Resource Management and other related programs.
Combined CAP-CIP Funding Application Form
Each year, the NCN Trust Office issues a CAP-CIP application form to be completed by NCN organizations or individuals seeking trust funding support for their projects or programs. Electronic versions of the forms are made available here for download or print versions are available at the NCN Trust Office. To familiarize yourself with the form, you can download a copy of the 2009 edition by clicking on the link below. This will be replaced by the 2010 version when it becomes available.
